This homemade hot chocolate recipe is delicious, easy to make, and so creamy! It’s the perfect drink to warm you up on a cold day!
Is it better to make hot chocolate with milk or water?
We’ve used plant-based milk instead of water for this recipe because milk gives a creamier texture to the hot chocolate drink. However, it is possible to use water. Boiling water helps bloom the cocoa powder, improving the taste of the hot chocolate.
Ingredients to make this recipe
This homemade hot chocolate is the perfect drink to follow up with some chocolate chip cookies or a slice of banana bread on a rainy winter day. It’s so easy to make, and these are the ingredients that you will need:
Almond milk: We’ve used almond milk, but feel free to use any milk you like. Coconut or hazelnut milk will work great too!
Cocoa powder: The start of this recipe! Cocoa powder is an essential ingredient in this recipe. Don’t forget to sift the cocoa powder to break up any lumps.
Dark chocolate: Dark chocolate adds an extra chocolaty flavor to this drink! Make sure you use a good quality one.
Arrowroot powder: Arrowroot powder is the secret ingredient to achieve the best thick and creamy texture ever! If you prefer a more liquid hot chocolate, you can omit this ingredient.
Maple syrup: Maple syrup is a healthier option to make this hot chocolate sweeter. If you don’t have maple syrup on hand, you can use sugar instead.
Salt: Like any other sugary recipe, a pinch of salt will enhance the sweet flavor!
How to make this recipe
Mix three tablespoons of milk with cocoa powder and arrowroot. Make sure you sift the cocoa powder and arrowroot to avoid lumps in your drink.
Then, add the remaining milk, maple syrup, salt, and the previous mixture into a small saucepan.
Heat the saucepan over low to medium heat and continuously whisk until creamy. Allow gentle simmer for a few seconds to activate the arrowroot powder. Add the chopped dark chocolate, turn off the heat and mix until the chocolate has melted. Pour into a mug and serve immediately. Top with whipped cream and grated chocolate!
Tips for making this recipe
- Use good quality chocolate and cocoa powder: The better the chocolate’s quality, the better the drink will taste! So, make sure you use a good quality chocolate bar to make it super delicious.
- Sift the cocoa powder: Cocoa powder is very clumpy! If you add it straight to the batter, it will be tough to break up any lumps. To prevent any lumps in the mixture, make sure you sift the cocoa powder and arrowroot powder.
